Android vs. iPhone NFC: Subtle Differences You Should Know
You go to tap your card on a client’s phone. You tap... nothing happens. You try again. Still nothing. It’s not the card. It’s the phone. iPhones and Androids have their NFC antennas in different spots. Knowing this distinction makes you look like a tech wizard.
The iPhone "Head-Butt" (Top)
- Models: iPhone XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and newer.
- The Spot: The NFC reader is at the very top edge (near the earpiece/camera).
-
The Move: Tap your card against the top back of the iPhone. Do not tap the middle (where the Apple logo is); it won't work.

The Android "Bulls-eye" (Middle)
- Models: Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus.
- The Spot: The reader is usually in the dead center of the back of the phone.
- The Move: Tap your card flat against the middle of the phone case.
- Note: Some older Androids require NFC to be toggled "ON" in the Quick Settings menu.

Universal Tip: "Wake It Up"
For security, most phones won't scan while the screen is black. Always ask the person to "wake up" or unlock their screen before you tap.
Mastering the "Top vs. Middle" tap ensures you get a 100% success rate, regardless of what phone your client uses.
