RFID vs. NFC: The Technology Inside Your TapMo Card
You’ll often hear the terms "RFID" and "NFC" thrown around when talking about smart cards. Are they the same thing? Ideally, yes and no. Let's break down the tech jargon so you know exactly what is powering your TapMo Card.
The Parent: RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)
RFID is the broad category. It’s been around for decades. It’s used in warehouse tracking, FastTags for highway tolls, and employee access badges. RFID can work over long distances (like scanning your car on the highway).
The Child: NFC (Near Field Communication)
NFC is a specific branch of RFID. The key difference is in the name: "Near". NFC only works when two devices are very close together (usually 4cm or less).
Why TapMo Uses NFC
We use NFC for business cards for two main reasons:
-
Intent: Because the range is so short, you have to intentionally tap the card. This prevents accidental scanning.
-
Smartphone Compatibility: almost every modern smartphone is built with an NFC reader for payments. This means your TapMo Card works natively with the devices your clients already have.
Is It Safe?
Yes. Because NFC requires close contact, no one can scan your card from across the room. You have total control over who sees your information.
You don’t need to be an engineer to use TapMo, but knowing it uses secure, short-range NFC technology gives you peace of mind that your data is handled correctly.
