NFC vs. Bluetooth: Why NFC Won the Battle for Business Cards

NFC vs. Bluetooth: Why NFC Won the Battle for Business Cards

Technically, your phone has Bluetooth and NFC. So why did the world decide that NFC (Near Field Communication) is the standard for business cards and payments, while Bluetooth is for headphones? It comes down to one word: Friction.

1. No Pairing Required

  • Bluetooth: Requires "Discovery Mode," finding the device, entering a code, and pairing. It takes 15–30 seconds.
  • NFC (TapMo): Requires zero setup. You tap, and it works. In networking, you don't have 30 seconds; you have 2 seconds.

2. No Batteries Required

  • Bluetooth: Active Bluetooth tags (like Tile trackers) need a battery. Batteries die.
  • NFC (TapMo): Your TapMo Card is passive. It has no battery. It draws the tiny bit of energy it needs wirelessly from the phone that scans it. This means your TapMo Card never needs charging.

3. Security & Range

Bluetooth can work from 30 feet away, which means you could accidentally spam people with your info. NFC only works at 4cm range. This ensures that a data exchange only happens when you want it to.

Bluetooth is great for music, but for swapping info quickly and securely, NFC is the undisputed champion.
