Troubleshooting 101: What to Do if a Tap Doesn’t Work

Troubleshooting 101: What to Do if a Tap Doesn’t Work

The "Magic Tap" is designed to be instant, but occasionally, technology needs a little nudge. If you’re tapping your TapMo Metal Card and nothing is happening, don’t panic! It’s rarely a problem with the card - it’s usually just a quick setting or placement adjustment.

Here is your 4-step checklist to troubleshoot any connection in seconds.

1. Check the Phone Status (Unlock is Key)

For security reasons, both iPhones and Androids disable their NFC readers when the screen is off or locked.

  • The Fix: Ensure the recipient's phone is unlocked and the home screen or an app is visible. A "sleeping" phone will not read your TapMo chip.

2. Verify NFC is "ON" (Android Specific)

While iPhones have NFC "always-on," many Android devices (Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus) allow users to toggle it off to save battery.

  • The Fix: Ask the user to swipe down their notification tray and look for the NFC icon. If it’s greyed out, tap it to turn it blue.
  • Path: Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > NFC.

3. The "Sweet Spot" Alignment

As we’ve mentioned before, placement is everything. If you are tapping the middle of an iPhone, it won’t work. If you are tapping the top of an Android, it might miss the sensor.

  • For iPhone: Tap the Square Chip side of your card against the top edge (near the earpiece/cameras).
  • For Android: Tap the Square Chip side against the center-back of the phone.
  • Movement Tip: If it doesn't read instantly, slide the card slowly down the back of the phone until the sensor triggers.

4. The "Airplane Mode" & Flashlight Rule

On some phone models, if the Flashlight is on or the phone is in Airplane Mode, the NFC antenna is temporarily disabled to prevent interference.

  • The Fix: Ensure the flashlight is off and the phone has a basic connection (Wi-Fi or Data) to load your digital profile once the tap is successful.

The Ultimate Backup: The QR Code

If you’re dealing with a very old smartphone (pre-2018) or a device with a broken NFC sensor, TapMo has you covered.

  • Don't Stress: Simply flip your card over. Every TapMo card features a high-definition QR Code laser-engraved on the back.
  • The Result: Ask them to open their camera, scan the code, and your profile will open instantly. You never have to miss a connection.

99% of "non-reads" are solved by simply unlocking the phone or toggling the NFC switch. With TapMo, you have a 100% success rate guaranteed by our dual Chip + QR technology.
